Chapter Seven

The next day was difficult.

There were two important operations, and Mr Haxton was back again for the first. He had obviously had a difficult weekend for he arrived in one of the moods for which he was notorious. He was one of those surgeons who got everything that he could out of the staff, and worked them to death. By lunchtime Sally was in a daze, and as the operation had taken such a time the Theatre Sister gave her a little longer off. She ate her meal, to her own surprise, for the heat of the theatre and the smell had at first taken her appetite away, but maybe she was acclimatizing herself to this. She went back for a couple of milder operations, without Mr Haxton, which was a blessed relief, for she was beginning to agree with the rest of the staff that he was a bully.

She had a look at next morning’s list, and saw that one operation was down for Mr Michael Steele; it was curious that she had never associated the name with the man who was just Mike to her. This meant that they would meet again.

It is going to be hard to keep it up, she told herself, but she would have to keep it up as long as she could. She was postponing the day of recognition.

She came out of the theatre at about four-thirty, put on a tidier cap and apron, and went down the stairs. She would be glad to eat out with Ferdie, anything to get away, and to rest. Now yesterday at Reigate seemed to be a million hours away. She ran down the stairs, two at a time, round the corner, on to the first floor, for this was a short cut through to the nurses’ home. As she turned the corner she almost ran into a man whom she had not heard approaching.

‘I’m so sorry,’ she apologized, then saw who it was. It was Mike! He stopped dead.

‘Sally!’

‘Yes, sir.’

‘Don’t call me “sir”,’ and he smiled. ‘So we meet again! Somehow I was always quite sure that we should.’

She said, ‘We met in the operating theatre on Friday. I helped you into your things.’

‘But Sally, why didn’t you say something?’

‘Sisters, and especially those poor fish who are merely Acting Sisters, do not address surgeons,’ she reminded him. She was bubbling over with ecstasy which she could not hide, and her eyes were dancing.

‘Will you come out and sup with me? We’ll go to the Caprice, or Quag’s, or the Ritz, which ever you like. That is if you aren’t too tired? Do sup with me?’

She had completely forgotten Ferdie. ‘I’d love it,’ she said. She knew that this was the crazy thing to do, but she was doing it, and loving it. Now she could not escape the thrill within herself.

‘I tried to find you and failed.’

‘You knew that I was a nurse.’

‘Yes, but you never told me which hospital you were in. You work in the theatre?’

‘Yes, I do, and I love it.
